I have spent many, many days sitting and sketching boatsheds around the Wellington region. This painting represents three imaginary boatsheds, built up from details and ideas collected during these visits. As I was working on this piece, I had a great sense that I was ‘renovating’ the boatsheds, stripping away parts of the exterior to reveal not only the physical structure but also allowing the construction lines to formulate an additional layer. One of delicate linework and simplified forms, reducing parts of the artwork to symbols or code – much like the Architect does with a set of plan drawings. The resulting work seems almost to float, presenting itself as both a drawing and a painting – hovering delicately somewhere in between.
