Nelsons Boulder Bank lighthouse was the second lighthouse to be built in NZ (1862). Around the base of the lighthouse are archaeological remains of the buildings that used to surround the lighthouse. These remains consist of building foundations, bricks, and garden areas as well as material cultural remains such as glass, ceramics, and coins. Included in this painting are the ghosted outlines of the lighthouse keeper’s cottage, built in 1875. Extensions were added on year by year as the families grew but all buildings were demolished once the lighthouse was automated. White fronted terns (whose breeding grounds include the Boulder Bank) fly gracefully through the scene.
