The Abel Tasman National Park was formed on the 16th of December 1942. The opening was marked as ‘The Tercentenary,’ as it was established exactly 300 years to the day since Abel Tasman visited the area. The major figure associated with the formation of Abel Tasman National Park was Pérrine Moncrieff, a female ornithologist and author. Moncrieff’s persistent lobbying to protect the natural beauty of the area was granted by the Nelson City Council and taken to Parliament where it was deemed worthy of National Park status.

This artwork topographically charts Able Tasman National Park, comparing the original park boundary (white border, 1942) with that which exists today (yellow boundary). The park is New Zealands smallest National Park however is also one of its most popular.
