Based on an archival photograph dated 1908, this painting shows Waihohonu Hut nestled at the base of Mount Ngauruhoe. This was the first hut built in Tongariro National Park in 1904, and is the oldest existing mountain hut in New Zealand. It remains as a heritage site today and is open for visitors.
