This painting is based on an archival photograph titled: ‘N.o 1 Hut at Ruapehu’, taken circa 1920 shortly after the hut was built, by an unidentified photographer. It is one of the earlier huts built in the Whakapapa area and the wooden skis and hanging washing were part of the original image. A rocky path leads to a corrugated iron hut, set within a flat grassy and rocky plain with a breathtaking vista of Mount Ruapehu in the distance. Images also exist with a horse drawn cart alongside, which has helped to date the construction of the hut. This hut is no longer in existence.
